Why?
Wednesday Mom came home around 4:30. I started to tell her about our "minor toilet overflow incident" (actually, it was kind of a major toilet overflow incident. Hannah cleaned up the cat poop that Sunflower left for us and flushed the whole wad of paper towels down the toilet. I was glad she was helping, though...)and she headed to the bathroom to view the damage. Dad came home a few minutes later. I was in the kitchen snapping beans and greeted him and asked how his day was. "Sucked," he said. Well, he always says that. I just thought work was hard and he just had a bad day.
A few minutes later I heard terrible sobbing coming from Mom and Dad's bedroom. The girls all started running around me asking questions,"Why's Mommy crying?" "What's the matter?" "Michelle, if you know what happened, tell us!"
I didn't know what happened. All I knew was that I have heard her cry like that too many times in the past three years. I knew immediately that something horrible happened. She only cries like that when someone dies.
After a few minutes, Mom ran out of the house, got in the van and left. Dad said to us,"I need to talk to you girls." I didn't want to hear it. I really didn't want to hear those words again, but I sat down on the couch with my sisters, anyway.
"Your Uncle Jerry called me at work a little bit ago..."he started. I was inwardly praying, Please, Lord, don't let it be Grandma. "Your Uncle Bernard killed himself." I was too shocked to do anything but shake my head. All I could feel was anger. Why? Why would he do that to this family again?
"He skipped a court date and the police put out a warrant for his arrest. They told him if he just turned himself in, he'd be fine. Evidently, he didn't see that as an option. He really didn't want to go back to prison."
I am struggling to understand. Why would he do that? Taking your life is the most wrong, horrible thing you can do. It's selfish. What about all the people that love you? Why don't they think about that before they pull the trigger? I understand that he had a hard life. I know he didn't want to go back to jail and deal with all that stuff all over again. He couldn't get a job, couldn't get a place to live, he left where he was before and went out with Grandma and Aunt B. without telling anybody so he could maybe start over. It didn't work.
Mom is really hurting. He was her only brother. She just had to deal with the tragic loss of her sister two years ago...isn't that enough? Wasn't losing her nephew enough? When does God say,"Okay, I think that family has dealt with enough pain now. Send on the blessings!" Does He ever say that? I know the Bible says He will never give us more than we can handle, but I would really like to know where the line is drawn.
I have so many questions...questions I've asked before, but never gotten answers to. The biggest one is Why? Why would he do that? Why would God allow him to do that? Couldn't He have shown him a better way?
Why?
